Quick picks

Pick a battery platform and you're likely on it for years, because every tool you add runs on the same batteries. DeWalt and Makita are the two most common on UK sites. Both are excellent, so the decision comes down to a few practical points.

What to look for

  • What does your firm use?. If the site runs one brand, match it. Shared batteries and chargers are worth more than any spec difference.
  • Range size. Both have hundreds of 18V tools. You won't run out on either.
  • Higher voltage options. DeWalt has FlexVolt (54V/18V batteries). Makita has a separate 40V XGT range for heavy tools.
  • Deals. Both regularly appear in multi-tool kits. Compare kit prices before buying single tools.

Best for most sites

DeWalt 18V XR

Yellow and black · XR brushless line

Tough, everywhere, and easy to find on deal. FlexVolt batteries also run big tools like table saws without changing platform.

Good

  • Very common on site, so easy to share batteries
  • FlexVolt batteries work in 18V tools
  • Lots of kit deals

Not so good

  • Batteries are bulky at higher Ah
  • Range is huge, so check you're buying XR brushless
Best for comfort

Makita 18V LXT

Teal · LXT range

Light, smooth and reliable, with one of the largest 18V ranges in the world. Popular with second fixers and anyone working overhead.

Good

  • Well balanced and comfortable
  • Huge LXT range including garden tools
  • Fast chargers

Not so good

  • Heavy-duty 40V XGT tools need different batteries
  • Fewer big-kit deals than DeWalt at times

Quick answers

Can I use Makita batteries in DeWalt tools?

Not officially. Third-party adapters exist but can void warranties and aren't recommended on site.

Which is more reliable?

Both are trade-grade and widely trusted. Look after your batteries and either will last years.

What about Milwaukee or Bosch?

Both are excellent too. Milwaukee is strong for heavy-duty and plumbing and electrical tools. Bosch Professional is strong for measuring tools.

Should an apprentice buy the cheapest platform?

Buy what your firm uses if you can. Being able to borrow a charged battery matters more than saving a few pounds.

Verdict

Match your firm. No preference? DeWalt XR for the biggest site presence and deals, Makita LXT if comfort matters most.
