The short version

  • Main routeNVQ in Plant Operations, Level 2
  • Leads toNPORS Blue Competent Operator card
  • HowAssessed on your own jobs. No classroom.
  • You needCurrent work in the trade to show
  • TimeOften a few months, depending on your evidence

Plant operators and slinger signallers can turn red trainee cards into blue competent operator cards through an on-site NVQ.

Who it's for

  • Plant operators on a trained or red card
  • Slinger signallers
  • Lift supervisors and appointed persons

New to the trade? On-site NVQs need real jobs to assess, so they're not for complete beginners. Start with an apprenticeship or college course. See routes for new starters.

Which qualification?

QualificationLevelCard it leads to
NVQ in Plant Operations2NPORS Blue Competent Operator
NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations: Slinger Signaller2NPORS N402 or CPCS A40 Blue
Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations: Planning Lifts5Appointed Person (CPCS or NPORS)

Each machine or role has its own category. Check your current card category before you register.

What the assessor wants to see

  • Observed operation of your machine on site
  • Lift plans and pre-use checks
  • Logbook entries
  • Supervisor witness statements

Tip: Keep your logbook up to date. It's the easiest evidence you'll have.

How it works

  1. Quick skills check

A short check of your plant experience works out the right level and pathway.

  2. Register

You're registered with the awarding body and given a portfolio to fill.

  3. Build your evidence

Photos, job sheets and witness statements from work you're already doing.

  4. Site visit

Assessment happens on site while you operate your machine or run lifts, with your logbook and pre-use checks reviewed.

  5. Discussion

Expect questions on ground conditions, exclusion zones, lift plans and what you'd do when things change mid-job.

  6. Certificate

After a quality check, you're qualified.

How long it takes

Operators already working on a trained card can often progress quickly, as long as their logbook is up to date.

Cost

Prices rise with the level. Expect four figures for Level 3 and above, with Level 6 and 7 at the top end. Get a few quotes. These are ballpark figures. The price usually covers registration, assessment and the certificate. Some providers offer instalments, and employers may be able to claim a CITB grant.

Getting your card

Plant and lifting routes lead to competent operator cards, such as NPORS or CPCS blue cards, rather than the usual CSCS trade cards. Appointed person roles have their own card.

Quick answers

How do I move from a red card to a blue card?

Usually by completing the relevant NVQ while working on site under your trained card.

Does each machine need its own qualification?

Each machine category is assessed separately. Check the category on your current card.

Is slinger signaller a separate route?

Yes. It has its own NVQ and card category.

Is there a written exam?

Not for the NVQ itself. It's assessed through evidence, observation and discussion. The CITB HS&E test for your card is separate.
