Quick picks

On first fix days, roofs and stud walls, a tool belt saves hundreds of trips to the bag. You won't need one for every job, but when you do, a good one is worth it.

What to look for

  • Leather or nylon. Leather moulds to you and lasts. Nylon is lighter, cheaper and copes with rain better.
  • Pouch layout. Two pouches (nails one side, screws the other) suit most carpenters.
  • Hammer loop and tape clip. The two things you'll reach for most.
  • Braces. Take the weight off your hips on long days. Worth it if your belt is heavy.
  • Keep it light. Only carry what that job needs.

Quick answers

Do apprentices need a tool belt?

Handy for first fix and roofing, but not essential on day one. A tape clip and pencil pocket cover a lot.

Leather or nylon?

Nylon to start, leather once you know you'll use it daily.

Verdict

Start with a light nylon double-pouch belt. Upgrade to leather and add braces if it becomes daily kit.
