The short version

  • Main routeLevel 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship. Usually around four years.
  • Gas workNeeds separate ACS assessments and Gas Safe registration.
  • Age limitNone.
  • DemandQualified, Gas Safe plumbers are in short supply.
  • Watch out forExpensive 'qualified in weeks' plumbing courses.

Plumbing covers water, heating and drainage, and many plumbers go on to gas and heat pumps. The recognised route is a Level 3 apprenticeship. Gas work is a separate step, and the one that makes the biggest difference to earnings.

The main routes in

  1. Apprenticeship

The Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship is the standard route, typically around four years with day release at college. Some programmes include a gas pathway.

  2. College course first

Plumbing diplomas teach the skills in a workshop. You'll still need on-site experience and an NVQ to be treated as qualified.

  3. Low carbon and gas routes

There are also Level 3 apprenticeships in low carbon heating (heat pumps) and gas engineering.

Gas Safe registration

Finishing a plumbing qualification doesn't let you work on gas. Any gas work in the UK legally requires Gas Safe registration. To register, you pass ACS assessments for the appliance types you'll work on, and then renew your registration every year.

What it costs

RouteCost to you
ApprenticeshipTraining paid by employer. You earn a wage.
College courseOften free for 16–18s. Adults may pay fees or use a loan.
ACS + Gas SafeAssessment fees, then an annual registration fee

Avoid 'become a plumber in six weeks' packages. They rarely lead to a recognised Level 3 or Gas Safe registration. Ask exactly what qualification you'll hold at the end.

Changing career into plumbing

Adults can do apprenticeships too, and many firms like mature starters. If you can't get one straight away, a part-time college course while you keep your job is a lower-risk way in. Getting work as a plumber's mate helps build the on-site experience you'll need.

Quick answers

How long does it take to become a plumber?

Around four years through a Level 3 apprenticeship.

Do plumbers need to be Gas Safe?

Only to work on gas. Water, heating and drainage work doesn't need it, but many plumbers add gas because it's in demand.

Is plumbing a good career?

There's a well-known shortage of qualified plumbers, especially Gas Safe ones, and the skills transfer into heat pumps and renewables.

Can I do a plumbing apprenticeship as an adult?

Yes. There's no upper age limit on apprenticeships.
