Get into a trade

Leaving school or switching careers, here's how to get started in each trade. Already working without paperwork? See Get qualified.

Before you start, whatever the trade

  • Apprenticeships have no upper age limit. Adults can apply too.
  • Apprentice pay is at least £8.00 an hour in your first year (April 2026 rate). From year two you're owed the normal minimum wage for your age.
  • You'll need a site card. CSCS for most trades, ECS for electricians.
  • Be wary of expensive fast-track courses that promise you'll be qualified in weeks.
