- Leads toBlue Skilled Worker card
- HowAssessed on your own jobs. No classroom.
- You needCurrent work in the trade to show
- TimeOften a few months, depending on your evidence
Fitting solar panels already? An NVQ in photovoltaic installation gives you a recognised qualification and a Blue card for site work.
Who it's for
- Solar installers who learned on the job
- Roofers and electricians moving into solar
- Installers needing a card for commercial roofs
New to the trade? On-site NVQs need real jobs to assess, so they're not for complete beginners. Start with an apprenticeship or college course. See routes for new starters.
Which qualification?
| Qualification | Level | Card it leads to |
|---|---|---|
| NVQ in the Installation of Photovoltaic Panels | 2 | Blue Skilled Worker |
This covers the physical install. Electrical connection and scheme certification are separate, so check what your role needs.
What the assessor wants to see
- Installs photographed from fixings to finished array
- Roof safety and access records
- Job specs and handover paperwork
- Witness statements from your supervisor
Tip: Photograph the roof fixings before the panels go on. Once they're covered, the evidence is gone.
How it works
Quick skills check
A short check of your solar experience works out the right level and pathway.
Register
You're registered with the awarding body and given a portfolio to fill.
Build your evidence
Photos, job sheets and witness statements from work you're already doing.
Site visit
An assessor watches a panel install, from roof access and fixings to mounting the array, with safe working at height in place.
Discussion
Expect questions on roof surveys, fixings and weathering, handling panels and working safely around live systems.
Certificate
After a quality check, you're qualified.
How long it takes
Installers fitting regularly can gather evidence quickly, though weather can affect roof work.
Cost
Expect to pay roughly £800–£1,000 + VAT for a Level 2 or 3 with a private assessment centre. Supervisory and management levels cost more. These are ballpark figures. The price usually covers registration, assessment and the certificate. Some providers offer instalments, and employers may be able to claim a CITB grant.
Getting your card
The Level 2 PV installation NVQ leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card, alongside the CITB HS&E test.
Quick answers
Does this qualify me to connect the electrics?
No. It covers the physical installation. Electrical connection needs separate electrical competence.
Is this the same as scheme certification?
No. Certification schemes for installers are separate. Check what your employer or customers require.
Can roofers do this NVQ?
Yes, if they're installing panels as part of their work.
Is there a written exam?
Not for the NVQ itself. It's assessed through evidence, observation and discussion. The CITB HS&E test for your card is separate.
