The short version

  • HowAssessed on your own jobs. No classroom.
  • You needCurrent work in the trade to show
  • TimeOften a few months, depending on your evidence

Roofing is one of the trades where sites check cards hardest. If you've got the experience, an on-site NVQ is the quickest way to prove it.

Who it's for

  • Roofers without a formal qualification
  • Cladding installers on commercial jobs
  • Self-employed roofers tendering for bigger contracts

New to the trade? On-site NVQs need real jobs to assess, so they're not for complete beginners. Start with an apprenticeship or college course. See routes for new starters.

Which qualification?

QualificationLevelCard it leads to
NVQ Diploma in Roofing Occupations2Blue Skilled Worker
NVQ Diploma in Cladding Occupations3Gold Advanced Craft

The roofing NVQ covers several roof types. Choose the route that matches what you mostly do.

What the assessor wants to see

  • Roof work photographed at each stage, done safely
  • RAMS and toolbox talk records
  • Job sheets and specs
  • Witness statements from the site manager

Tip: Working-at-height safety is part of the evidence. Make sure your photos show it being done properly.

How it works

  1. Quick skills check

A short check of your roofing experience works out the right level and pathway.

  2. Register

You're registered with the awarding body and given a portfolio to fill.

  3. Build your evidence

Photos, job sheets and witness statements from work you're already doing.

  4. Site visit

The assessor attends a roof you're working on, with safe access in place, to see how you set out, fix and finish your chosen roof type.

  5. Discussion

They'll cover working at height, weathering details like valleys and abutments, and manufacturer fixing requirements.

  6. Certificate

After a quality check, you're qualified.

How long it takes

Roofers doing one main roof type can collect evidence quickly. Weather can delay site visits in winter, so plan around it.

Cost

Expect to pay roughly £800–£1,000 + VAT for a Level 2 or 3 with a private assessment centre. Supervisory and management levels cost more. These are ballpark figures. The price usually covers registration, assessment and the certificate. Some providers offer instalments, and employers may be able to claim a CITB grant.

Getting your card

Level 2 roofing leads to the Blue Skilled Worker card, and the Level 3 cladding NVQ to Gold Advanced Craft. You'll need the CITB HS&E test too.

Quick answers

Which roof types can I be assessed on?

There are routes for different coverings, such as slating and tiling, flat roofing and sheeting. Choose the one you mostly do.

Does the assessor need to go on the roof?

They need to see the work safely. Your access and edge protection must meet the rules.

Is cladding a separate qualification?

Yes. Cladding has its own Level 3 NVQ.

Is there a written exam?

Not for the NVQ itself. It's assessed through evidence, observation and discussion. The CITB HS&E test for your card is separate.
